Stein Tønnesson,JOINT DEVELOPMENT OR CONFLICT RESOLUTION IN THE SOUTH CHINA SEA

Mô tả
A common point of view is that the sovereignty disputes in the South China Sea are so complex, and so unlikely to be resolved in a long time, that the best way of furthering peace and mutual understanding in the region is to jointly develop resources in disputed areas. This paper takes a different view, arguing that joint exploration and exploitation of resources (particularly oil) is dangerous and may provoke conflict rather than promote long term co-operation. It further argues that the disputes over delimitation of maritime zones in the South China Sea are not too complex to be resolved, and that international law provides a solid basis for doing so. It further argues that it is in the best long term interest of China to take the lead in resolving the South China Sea disputes on the basis of international law
