This thesis will address the puzzle of China's intentions in the South China Sea. Hence, it will provide an input to the ongoing "pros and cons" debate on China's veiled regional ambitions. In order to gain a deeper understanding of China's motives in the South China Sea, it is neccessary to grasp the mechanisms behind the formulation of China's policy. In this thesis focus will be put on one possible determinant: the thesis will discuss the influence of nationalism on China;s Spratly policy
