This thesis focuses on the Chinese national interests in the South China Sea. The intention is to determine what China’s national interests are in the South China Sea, and to shed light on how these national interest are formed and how they relate to each other. More precisely, the aim of the thesis is to answer why is the securing of the petroleum resources of the South China Sea not a short-term Chinese national interest, and in the process I hope to answer who is involved in the formation of this policy and how does this policy formation process take place. China's national interest are in the thesis seen as the interests and preferences of the central leadership, and I discuss if what we perceive to be China’s national interests in the South China Sea are truly the interests of the central leadership, or whether they represent the bureaucratic interests of other Chinese actors located outside of the central leadership.
