This article provides a legal analysis of these disputes. In Part I, we will briefly discuss the geopolitical context of the Spratly Islands dispute. Part II will detail the applicable international legal principles of acquisition of territories and cite relevant cases. The discussion will focus on the doctrines of ’discovery-occupation’ and ’acquisitive prescription'. In Part III, we will summrrise the respective territorial claims of Vietnam and China. In Part IV, an analysis will be made of the relative merits of the sovereignty claims of Vietnam and China
