Johan Henrik Nossum, Student of Law, Centre for Development and the Environment, University of Oslo This paper is an introduction to the methodology of utilising straight baselines, and it will present two areas where the development of the Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZ) leads to uncertainties when applying the straight baseline regime. The paper will also look into the possibility to reduce the disputed area in the region by an appropriate appliance of the straight baseline regime, and if such an appliance could support UNCLOS’ role as a tool for conflict resolution. I refer to the Convention text in this paper’s paragraph 6, and would like to inform that this paper will be presented with charts and maps at the workshop in Oslo April 25 1999.
